HS Program - Specialist High Schools Major (SHSM)

St Luke Catholic High School specializes in cooperative education.  Students earn their high school diploma by participating in our comprehensive “learning by doing” program.

In grade 9, students start a coop placement once a month to explore the world of work.  Grade 9 students earn 8 high school credits which consist of English, Math, Science, Physical Education, Native Studies Art, Hospitality/Trade and Tech, History and Religion.

In grade 10, students attend school one day and coop the next day all year long.  Students earn 8 high school credits – English, Math, Science, Focus Program and 4 Coop Credits.

In grade 11 and 12 students continue their coop placements and earn 8 high school credits – English, Math, 2 Focus Program courses and 4 Coop Credits.  Often, coop placements turn into full time employment and apprenticeships.

Hospitality and Tourism Focus Program

            

In our Hospitality and Tourism Focus Program, students learn about guidelines for making nutritious food choices and the course provides opportunities to develop food-preparation skills. Students will investigate factors that influence food choices, including beliefs, attitudes, current trends, traditional eating patterns, food-marketing strategies, and individual needs.  Students will also explore the environmental impact of a variety of food choices at the local and global level.  In Grade 11 and 12 students work towards a Specialist High Skills Major – Hospitality and Tourism which consists of the following certifications and experiential learning:

  • CPR Level C – includes automated external defibrillation (AED)
  • Customer Service
  • Standard First Aid
  • WHMIS – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Cash Handling and Register Training
  • Smart Serve
  • Le Cordon Bleu Arts Institute, Ottawa – Field Trip
  • International Restaurant at St Lawrence College – Field Trip
  • Canning and Preserving Foods – salsa, mince meat, red pepper jelly, basil pesto, …
  • Master Chef Competition at St Lawrence College, OYAP
  • Cake Decorating
  • Catering
  • International Foods and Traditions

 

Trade and Technology Focus Program

       

In our Trade and Technology Focus Program, students learn knowledge and skills related to residential construction. Students will gain hands-on experience using a variety of construction materials, processes, tools, and equipment; learn about building design and planning construction projects; create and interpret working drawings and sections; and learn how the Ontario Building Code and other regulations and standards apply to construction projects. Students will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and will explore career opportunities in the field.  In Grade 11 and 12 students work towards a Specialist High Skills Major – Construction which consists of the following certifications and experiential learning:

  • Standard First Aid
  • WHMIS – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Canadian Welding Council Flat Welding Level 1
  • Working at Heights
  • Confined Space Awareness
  • St Lawrence College Dual Credit – CARPENTRY 24 – team taught with a St Lawrence College Professor at St Luke CHS
  • Construction Competition at St Lawrence College, OYAP
